Telemar SRL

Telemar SRL is a major producer and distributor of seafood products that is located in the industrial zone of Chisinau. Apart from production and distribution, Telemar also operates shops in supermarkets and mobile retail units. Telemar invested EUR 570,000 in several energy saving measures, including building rehabilitation and replacement of equipment. Financed by a MoSEFF loan the benefits include 55% energy savings, a 66% carbon emission reduction, increased product quality and improved working conditions in the plant. The project has a payback period of 8 years.

Ecoprod-Rosmol SRL

Ecoprod-Rosmol SRL is a well-established producer of frozen vegetable products. Founded in 1998 and located in Causeni, the company applied for a MoSEFF loan to finance the replacement of a compressor unit as well as the thermal insulation of cooling chambers. Apart from the cost benefits achieved through the energy savings, the company also benefits from improved cooling processes, which increases the level of product quality and food safety. With the EUR 180,000 investment, the company saves 76% of energy and reduces its carbon emissions by 256 tons annually. The payback period is 3.9 years.

Debut-Sor SRL

Debut-Sor SRL is a producer of sausages and meat products. The factory is located in Soroca and the products are sold mainly in that region. The company recognized energy efficiency as a viable cost reduction strategy, which will increase its competitiveness. With a MoSEFF loan of EUR 147,497, Debut-Sor invested in the replacement of several units in its production process. The new machines use less energy than the old ones and facilitate higher quality production. The company saves 23% energy and 11 tons carbon emissions annually. The payback period is 7 years.

Orhei Vit SA

Orhei Vit SA produces juices, canned vegetables and semi-finished products. The company’s 5 brands are well known in Moldova. The production processes of the company rely on efficient steam production and steam distribution. With MoSEFF financing of about EUR 520,000, Orhei Vit replaced its steam boiler. At the same time a 510 m steam distribution pipeline was decommissioned to avoid significant steam distribution losses. The company saves 24% energy and reduces its carbon emissions by 714 tons per year. The payback period is 3.5 years.

Posta Veche SA

Posta Veche SA is a service provider in catering and banquet organization, including the letting of banqueting rooms. The building that houses these facilities is located in Chisinau and includes a bakery, a pharmacy and a supermarket. To reduce its energy cost, Posta Veche used a MoSEFF loan of about EUR 212,000 to finance the rehabilitation of the building shell, replacement of key equipment such as hot water boilers, heat recovery and ventilation system, and the installation of solar thermal collectors. The company saves 94 MWh electric energy, 367 MWh natural gas and reduces its carbon emissions by 68%. The payback period is 7 years.

JLC SA

JLC, the largest dairy processing factory in Republic of Moldova, successfully implemented two steam boilers in its dairy plant in Chisinau with financing provided by MoSEFF. The new steam boilers are of the type CLAYTON SEG-304-3, with a heating capacity of 2,943 kW each and a steam production capacity of about 4.5 t/h per unit.Since the boilers were mounted close to the JLC production building, about 327 m of the old steam distribution pipeline was decommissioned, avoiding significant distribution losses. The saving effects for JLC result in a 21% reduction of natural gas consumption and 49% reduction of boiler related electricity consumption. The investment of about 510,000 EUR pays back in 4.2 years. The project was 100% financed by a MoSEFF loan.

Projects in the Agricultural Sector

Magt Vest SRL

As a traditional well established sugar producer, Magt Vest is benefiting from fuel savings and higher harvesting yield after replacing its 20 obsolete harvesters and tractors against 5 modern sugar beat harvesters and 2 loaders. The new machines have cut the company’s fuel consumption almost in half, with matching carbon savings. At the same time, harvesting losses have dropped from 15% to 5 % with the implementation of the new machines. All 7 machines were financed through a MoSEFF loan of EUR 2.3 million. The payback period is 5.5 years.

Agromaxer SRL

The company specializes in growing field tomatoes and is now increasing its business with the installation of a new heating system in its two greenhouses. The heat is supplied entirely by two biomass boilers, which will allow the company to increase its winter production. Apart from the extended growing season, the new system also improves the health of the plants. Pellets are used as fuel, instead of natural gas. The biomass boilers were financed with the help of a MoSEFF loan of EUR 250,000. The company saves 91% of energy and reduces its annual CO2 emission by 1322 tons. The payback period is 1 year.

Fructagrocom CI

Fructagrocom, produces tomatoes and cucumbers in greenhouses and on the open field. The company invested in five new condensing boilers and three pellet boilers to improve the greenhouse productivity. In addition, a new near-soil heating system produces better quality plants and yield than the already installed air heating system. As the new system arrangement leads to significant reductions in gas consumption, the project is also financially very attractive. With a total investment of EUR 175,344, the company saves 56% in energy and reduces its CO2 emissions by 59%. The payback period is 1 year.

GT Moraru

The company was the first in Moldova to produce electricity from biogas. The original plant, which was in operation from 2004-2007 was damaged when it stopped operating due to the closure of the adjacent cattle farm. As the slurry supply is now once more secured, GT Moraru used a MoSEFF loan of EUR 37,300 to rehabilitate the plant. As part of the project, additional improvements were made in the biomass and slurry handling and in the reconnection of the plant to the national grid. The company reduces its CO2 emissions by 321 tons annually. The payback period is 4 years.

Autotehnica SRL

Autotehnica SRL provides transportation and machinery services to industry and agricultural companies. As part of its services, the company provides complete sugar beet harvesting services, including transportation to the sugar factories. With a MoSEFF loan of EUR 1,24 million, the company replaced four harvesters against three state of the art harvesters. The company benefits from a reduced fuel consumption of 35,021 liters per year, combined with less soil transported with the produce to the sugar factories. The project has increased the company’s competitiveness and reduced its CO2 emission by 93 tons per year. The payback period is 7.5 years.

Vagadi SRL

Vagadi SRL is an agricultural company located in Alcedar village, which was founded in 1993. Vagadi grows, reaps, stores and sells a wide variety of fruit and crops. With MoSEFF support, Vagadi replaced five small tractors with one John Deere, the seeding and weeding machines as well as the plows. The company reduced diesel consumption with 29.7% and the CO2 emissions by 35.6 tons per year. The payback period is 5.6 years.

Projects in the Industrial Sector

FEC SA

FEC SA was founded almost 60 years ago in Moldova. FEC supplies raw concrete and produces concrete construction elements. To reduce its energy consumption and its energy cost, the company obtained a MoSEFF loan to replace an old piston air compressor against a new one and to fit its cranes with VSD controllers, which allow soft start without power demand pulse. With the investment of EUR 161,109 the company reduced its energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 26%. The payback period is 5 years.

Covoare Ungheni SA

Covoare Ungheni SA, one of the largest carpet producers in the region and a major exporter to Europe and other countries, implemented several projects. For it’s Industrial Energy Efficiency project, the company obtained a MoSEFF loan to finance a burner replacement, a power factor correction unit PFC and a water purification system. With the investment of EUR 212,300 and a payback period of no more than 2.1 years, the company achieved 51% energy savings and 54% in CO2 emissions reduction.

Macon SA

MACON SA is a manufacturer of bricks in Chisinau. The company applied for MoSEFF financing for the implementation of frequency converters for its fan drives and a power factor correction unit for reactive power compensation. The new components contributed to significant reductions in electric energy consumption and a subsequent reduction in energy costs. With the EUR 48,000 investment, Macon saves 26% of energy and reduces CO2 emissions by 208 tons annually. The payback period is 2.5 years.

Moldagrotehnica SA

Moldagrotehnica SA is the largest producer of agricultural machines in Moldova and offers a wide range of products for the agricultural sector: plows, seeders, trailers, harvesting machines as well as biomass and pellet boilers. The company invested in a new coloring line with the help of MoSEFF financing. The benefits of the resulting reduction in energy consumption were further enhanced by the improved product quality. Additional benefits stem from a reduction in coloring agent. With the EUR 150,000 investment and payback period of 2.5 years, the company reduced its energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 59%.

Ionel SA

Ionel SA is the largest and one of the best-known garment manufacturers in Moldova. With 850 employees, the company produces fashion products for sale in Moldova but also for export to Europe and to CIS countries. To remain competitive in the highly cost conscious textile market, Ionel used MoSEFF financing to implement cost reduction measures to reduce its energy consumption by partially replacing of its old equipment. With the investment of EUR 452,000 and payback period of 4.9 years, the company achieved 43% energy savings and a 40% carbon emission reduction.

CND-Construct

Founded in 2008, CND-Construct is one of the largest PVC windows manufacturers from Balti city. 
The company invested in a replacement of technological equipment, a measure that was implemented with MoSEFF support. The company replaced the old head mitre saw machine with a new digitally controlled automatic double head mitre saw, with an installed electric capacity of 3.37 kW. As the new machine is equipped with double saw and can cut the profile in double layers, it has lower specific energy consumption and high quality. Another investment was in the replacement of the old welding machine with a new double head adjustable-angle machine, with lower specific energy consumption and better welding quality. It has an installed electric capacity of 4.0 kW.
The project was 100% financed by a MoSEFF loan and is eligible for a grant component of 10% of the loan amount.

Projects in Building Rehabilitation

Artima SA

Artima SA produces bags, travel and other accessories made from leather, and mainly for export. Founded in 1945 and restructured in 1995, the company decided to invest in energy efficiency measures, financed by a MoSEFF loan of EUR 177,160. As the building is connected to the district heating system, the improvement measures for now focused on the thermal insulation of walls and the replacement of windows. With these simple measures, the company achieved 83% energy savings and CO2 emissions reduction of 163 tons per year. The payback period is 7 years.

Volan-Autotrans SA

Volan-Autotrans SA provides transportation services for juice and wine as well as construction materials and other equipment, from Moldova mostly to CIS countries, Romania and Bulgaria. The company insulated its building with polystyrene and replaced the wooden windows with modern PVC windows. With a loan of EUR 56,136, the company improved the working conditions inside the building, complemented by 55% energy savings and an annual 79 ton CO2 emissions reduction. The payback period is 3.5 years.

Covoare Ungheni SA

Covoare Ungheni SA, one of the largest carpet producers in the region and major exporter to Europe and other countries, implemented several projects, which are described in a special case study in this brochure. For its Building Rehabilitation, the company obtained a MoSEFF loan of EUR 233,160 to finance the replacement of its old windows in the production and administrative buildings, and for the installation of two natural gas water heating boilers. With these measures the company achieved 29% savings in energy consumption and a 46% CO2 emission reduction. The payback period is 7 years.

Butoias SA

Butoias SA is a restaurant situated in Chisinau, Moldova. The restaurant has no possibility to connect to the district heating system and has no connection to the gas grid. Thus the company intended to use renewable energy sources for space heating and hot water supply. Butoias obtained MoSEFF financing of EUR 200,000 for building rehabilitation as well as installation of underground heat pumps and solar collectors. After applying these measures Butoias has annual thermal energy savings of about 1,242 MWh and annual CO2 emission savings of about 281 tons. The payback period is 5 years.

Projects in Small Enterprises

Startcom SRL

As a privately owned advertising company, Startcom rents out its advertising boards throughout the city of Chisinau. An important part of the business is illuminated boards, which require electrivity as the most a significant cost factor for the company. With a MoSEFF loan of EUR 22,167, the company financed the replacement of 340 flourescent gas lamps with LED lamps. The new lamps have better luminescence characteristics and reduce the company’s energy consumption by 90% and CO2 emissions by 31 tons annually. The payback period is 3.1 years.

Coloteia SRL

The main products of this family owned food producer are various types of sausages and hams. The company applied for a MoSEFF loan to replace its micro cutters and sausage filling machines, which were bought second hand in 1998 when the company was established. With the investment of EUR 135,500, which was financed by MICB, the company will reduce its energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 38%. At the same time the new machinery will allow Coloteia SRL to increase its production output and its product quality. The payback period is 5 years.

Oxmarpan SRL

Oxmarpan SRL is a bakery that started its activity in 2003. The heat demands of the company’s building were identified as a key energy efficiency target. MoSEFF financed the subsequent building insulation, replacement of doors and windows, and the replacement of the ventilation system with a EUR 33,000 loan. The company benefits from a 35% reduction in energy consumption and at the same time saves 8 tons of carbon emissions every year. The payback period is 4 years.

Solar Energy Projects

Vila Verde

The hotel Vila Verde in Ungheni was built in 1976 and was closed from 2003 to 2011. After undergoing a complete refurbishment, the hotel re-opened in the summer of 2011. The hotel now consists of 3 conference rooms and 58 guest rooms for the building rehabilitation. The company invested in one of the largest solar thermal systems in Moldova with a surface of 200 m2, in advanced condensing boilers and in building insulation. With these measures, financed with a MoSEFF loan of EUR 280,000, the hotel has reduced its energy consumption by 80% and its CO2 emissions by 133 tons per year.

Posta Veche SA

Posta Veche SA is a service provider in catering and banquet organization, including the letting of banqueting rooms. The building that houses these facilities is located in Chisinau and includes a bakery and a supermarket. To reduce its energy cost, Posta Veche used a MoSEFF loan of EUR 212,000 to finance various energy efficiency measures. The business as such has a fairly high demand in hot water. This is now being met through solar thermal collectors with a surface of 34 m2.

Butoias SA

Situated outside of Chisinau, the restaurant Butoias has no connection to the district heating system. To improve the way how it satisfies its hot water and heating demands, the company decided to invest in a heat pump and solar collectors with a surface of 25 m2. The building was insulated at the same time, reducing heat loss. With the combined measures, which were financed through a MoSEFF loan of EUR 200 000, Butoias reduced its primary energy consumption by more than 50% and its CO2 emissions by 53%.

Gelibert SRL

Gelibert SRL is a privately owned mineral water and soft-drinks production company, founded in January 2000. The premises of the company are located in the city of Sângerei, about 130 km north of Chisinau.
Beverages produced by Gelibert are sold under its own trademarks, mainly in the Moldavian market. Gelibert invested in several energy efficiency measures including the installation of a new bottle production line, installation of solar systems with a surface of 21 m2, building insulation, rehabilitation of the water treatment and filling station, as well as the installation of a new transformer station. With a MoSEFF loan of EUR 278,000 Gelibert SRL saves 42% of energy and reduces its CO2 emissions by 216 tons annually. The payback period is 6 years.

Solotrans-Agro

Solotrans-Agro is a company which focuses, mainly, on the sales and storages of different agricultural products as well as transportation of goods services; it also offers different commercial spaces for renting toother agricultural commerce companies.
Company applied for MoSEFF financing of the installation of a photovoltaic system on the company’s territory. The system comprises 400 PV panels, installed on one of the company’s building roof and their connection to the electricity grid through state-of-the-art invertors. As aresult of the project implementation, the company will generate about 136MWh of electricity annually. The payback period is less than 7 years.

AutoMar SRL

AutoMar is a small company which owns a fuel supply station and a car wash. Through the MoSEFF project, the company has received a loan for a 30 kW PV system installation and a grant component after the project implementation. The project comprises 120 photovoltaic panels mounted and placed on the roof surface. The photovoltaic installation will generate approximately 43 MWh of electricity annually and will help to reduce CO2 emissions by 30 tons annually.

Colizei Vechi

The natural stones cutting Company Colizei Vechi successfully implemented a 100 kW PV project. The PV system was installed on the company’s building roof and generates electricity for company’s needs and also into the public grid. By installing a solar park comprising 469 monocrystalline solar modules the company will benefit from approximately 126 MWh of electricity annually.
By implementing this project the company will contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions by almost 87 tons annually.
The project was fully financed by a MoSEFF loan and is eligible for the grant component of 20% from the loan amount.

Biomass Energy Projects

Gvardiola SRL

Gvardiola SRL is a producer of wooden doors, stairs, handrails and furniture. The company decided to utilize the biomass waste from its production processes as fuel for space heating and wood drying, in order to substitute electricity formally used for this purposes. MoSEFF financed the investment in a biomass boiler and the adjustment of the drying chambers to the new heating system. The project was financed through a MoSEFF loan of EUR 40,000.

EU-EBRD Sustainable Energy Excellence Awards 2012

Seven best sustainable energy projects under the Moldovan Sustainable Energy Financing Facility (MoSEFF) were honoured during the “EU-EBRD Sustainable Excellence Awards 2012” ceremony, held at the Leogrand Hotel in Chisinau on 15th February 2012.

Award for Industrial Energy Efficiency: MACON SA, Chisinau

The company used a MoSEFF loan from MICB to invest €48,000 the implementation of frequency converters for its fan drives and a power factor correction unit for reactive power compensation.  The investment produces a 26 per cent energy saving and 208 tonnes Carbon Emission Reduction per year. 

Award for Energy Efficiency in the Food Sector: ORHEI-VIT SA, Orhei

The company saves 24 per cent natural gas consumption per year with the installation of new steam boilers, financed through a €520,000 MoSEFF loan from MAIB. 

Award for Agricultural Energy Efficiency: MAGT VEST SRL, Dondusheni

The company used a €2.3 million MoSEFF loan from BCR Chisinau to replace its outdated sugar beet harvesters and loaders.  With this investment the company achieves a reduction in annual fuel consumption of almost 42 per cent and at the same time significantly reduces its harvesting losses. 

Award for Energy Efficiency in Small Enterprises: COLOTEIA SRL, Chisinau 

The company used a €135,000 MoSEFF loan from MICB to invest in a new meat grinder, vacuum bowl cutter and sausage filling machine, an investment that allows the company to save 38 per cent of electricity per year in the production process. 

Award for Best Building Rehabilitation: Restaurant BUTOIAS SA, Chisinau 

The restaurant saves 51 per cent energy yearly by insulating its building, installing new windows, solar collectors and heat pumps, financed by a MoSEFF loan of €200,000 from MICB. The project is a good example for smart combination of renewable heating sources. 

Award for Best Solar Project: VILA VERDE HOTEL UNGHENI, Ungheni 

The hotel installed one of the largest solar systems in Moldova and at the same time improved the building insulation and the heat distribution system with a €280,000 MoSEFF loan.  The project allows the company to save 80 per cent of final energy every year. 

Award for Best Biomass Energy Project: AGROMAXER SRL, Straseni 

The company operates greenhouses and has signed a €250,000 MoSEFF loan with MICB to construct a new boiler house, install new pellet boilers and a new near-soil heating system. The project enabled the company to reduce its carbon emissions by 100 per cent and achieve an annual primary energy saving of 91 per cent.
